Abstract

Background: Artificial intelligence (AI) has increasingly been integrated into higher education, including language learning and discipline-specific learning. Its use may influence students’ engagement, creativity, and writing skills, particularly among students in creative fields such as graphic design.
Aims: This research explores the perceptions of graphic design diploma students at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Perak regarding artificial intelligence (AI) and its usage in both the English language proficiency subject and their major subjects. It specifically investigates the impact of AI tools on students’ engagement with language and examines whether these technologies support their creative processes and writing skills.
Methods: A total of 47 graphic design diploma students participated in this study. Data were collected through a survey and analyzed using frequency and percentage metrics to identify students’ perceptions and patterns of AI usage.
Results: The findings provide insights into how university students perceive and utilize AI tools in their English language proficiency and major subjects. The results indicate the role of AI in supporting students’ learning experiences, particularly in relation to language engagement, creative processes, and writing activities.
Conclusion: The study highlights the growing role of AI in shaping educational experiences among graphic design students. The findings suggest that AI tools can contribute to students’ engagement with language learning and creative activities, while also providing useful perspectives on the integration of AI into higher education.
